Defamation Defense

Defamation lawsuits have spiked over the last decade. In many ways it’s been like waking up a hibernating bear at a picnic—that is, a feeding frenzy. Sadly, many people believe that sharing your opinion or speaking your mind makes for a lawsuit. We are not in the business of protecting lies, but we will defend you from detractors who are just angry about your speech.

We have represented clients with meritorious defamation claims as plaintiffs, but our focus is defense. Absent the most exceptional circumstances, we believe free speech, the free press and America benefit when citizens simply hold to the adage about “sticks and stones.” We zealously fight for speech the way you want to share it. No one should have to apologize for exercising First Amendment rights.

Unfortunately, defamation litigation is often expensive—the process is very much the punishment. But we work to mitigate that every step of the way, including strategies to narrow or defeat claims prior to discovery. If discovery is necessary, we work to expeditiously nail down the facts for successful resolution or victory at or before trial.

We have dealt with speech bullies and protected even the most controversial speakers. If you receive a defamation threat letter or lawsuit from someone upset about your speech, please contact us to see if we can help.
